Microsoft + Yahoo
What does Microsoft really see in Yahoo? I’ll go down the sidebar on the Yahoo! (I’m not sure why they have an !) homepage and tell you if I think Microsoft could see value in that particular part of Yahoo!.
Answers: I don’t think so, but more than many things there
Autos: no
Fincance: no
Flickr: yes
Games: no
Groups: no
HotJobs: no
Maps: maybe a little
Mobile Web: maybe that oneSearch search out loud thing
Movies: no
Music: no
Personals: no
Real Estate: no
Shopping: no
Sports: no
Tech: no
Travel: no
TV: no
Yellow Pages: no
Shine: same thing as MSN, it seems, from the little I know
Search: people just used what is built into their browsers (Google)
So… yeah… is Flickr (whose members will hate you) and an out loud search thing that I haven’t tried but probably doesn’t work worth $44.6 at the original offer?
How important is Twitter?
As of now, it seems like it is geeks talking about what boring (to most non-geeks) thing they are doing at the time in 140 characters or less. Imagine this, just for a minute…
Twitter is as popular as MySpace. Everyone at your school or whatever uses it.
I don’t know exactly what I’m getting at, but just think about that. You know what everyone is doing at all times. Is that good? Maybe yes. Maybe no.
MySpace is, in my opinion, a waste. I don’t have official numbers, but I’d bet well over half of the accounts haven’t been updated in months. What does MySpace really tell you about a person? I’d say almost nothing.
Now, compare that to Twitter. Yes, a lot of Twitter is just little bits of information that most people don’t care about. You have to get into the community of your choice. Right now, pretty much your only option are the geeks, and sub-categories of them. The bloggers, the photographers, the lolcatters, etc. What if you had all of your real life friends on Twitter?
I just keep saying the same thing over and over again, but what if you knew what all of your friends were doing?
There is something interesting going on over there at Twitter.
Future of TV
I was watching Chris Pirillo’s video about TV over on YouTube today. I was thinking about what he said, and this is what I hope for in the future of TV. The TV will just be the big screen in your living room. It will be connected to the internet. I’m not sure what the interface will be like, but you will choose the content you want to watch at the time. Want to watch the latest episode of House, “Don’t Ever Change,” just navigate to the page and hit the watch button. Or if you want to watch the ninth episode from season two? Just find the page and hit the watch button. There will be no reruns on “TV,” in which I mean no old episodes “on the air.” The only things that will be watched as non-recorded shows are now are new episodes and live events (sports games, presidential speeches, that kind of stuff). That stuff, too, should be able to be navigated to and watched at any time. I don’t know what to think of that idea, but any improvements or suggestions are welcome.
