Lightroom 2.0 Beta

without comments

Well, I’ve been using Aperture for about a month now, and I just downloaded the Adobe Photoshop Lighroom 2.0 beta I haven’t been using it for long (and by no means am I an expert or one you should base a purchasing decision of software worth hundreds of dollars on), but here are my thoughts so far.

All Personal Preference

I think the Lightroom interface is a bit prettier, but I like how the Aperture interface works more. It’s just personal preference, but I like the free-flowing nature of Aperture more than I do the panel design of Lightroom.

Mostly Personal Preference

I haven’t used Lightroom a lot yet, but there are a few little features I like better than Aperture. I like the way you can drag the histogram to change the color of the images in Lightroom, but I just don’t get why Adobe makes you go to the Develop module to do it. Why can’t you just do that in the Library module? There is one other thing that seems very useful in Lightroom is filtering, especially by metadata. You can go into your library, and on top of the image viewer, it says Filter. Choose metadata, and you can sort by some obvious things (that don’t seem to be present in Aperture, although I don’t know much, correct me if I’m wrong) like camera, lens, and date. There are also many other ones, which may or may not come in handy, such as shutter speed, ISO, or GPS data (could actually be nice if I had a GPS enabled camera).

Now, on to a few things I think the Lightroom 2.0 beta could improve on (although most of these are just personal preference, and I’m sure many people would hate Adobe for some of these things). I like the way Aperture handles projects/events better. I like the three-paned panel on the left side of Aperture which contains Projects, Metadata, and Adjustments better than Lightroom’s way of putting Projects and Folders on the left, and then the Adjustments on the right. Aperture also has a few minor features that I use quite a bit like the Loupe and the HUD in full-screen mode. It also integrates with iLife better than Lightroom (that is to be expected, though).

Conclusion

For now, I’ll be staying with Aperture, but I think Lightroom 2.0 final release will be much faster (I hope) and crash less than it does now. There are a few things I wish Aperture could adopt from Lightroom, but not enough to switch.
